Following several months of in-depth investigations, Samsung Electronics announced the cause of the Note7 incidents and measures to prevent a recurrence during a press conference held in Seoul, Korea.
As expected the reason for the explosion are defects in the design a manufacturing of the battery. The insulation material was insufficient and there was not enough space for the electrodes.
The reports for exploding phones started in late August last year. Samsung recalled the phones but some customers decided to keep and use them. In order to reduce the risk the company issued several updates.
The problems led to decision of the US aviation authorities to advise passengers not to turn on or change this particular phone during flights.
Based on what the company learned from the investigation, Samsung implemented a broad range of internal quality and safety processes to further enhance product safety including additional protocols such as the multi-layer safety measures and 8-Point Battery Safety Check.
Samsung also formed a Battery Advisory Group of external advisers, academic and research experts to ensure it maintains a clear and objective perspective on battery safety and innovation.
